Relocating with Pets in India: Your Furry Family Deserves the Best

Moving to a new city is a major life transition, but for your dogs, cats, or birds, it can be terrifying. Pets are sensitive to disruption in routine, unfamiliar sounds, and unfamiliar crates. In India, relocating a pet requires strict compliance with Indian Railways guidelines, airline pet carriage policies, veterinary certification, and climate management.

Under no circumstances should pets ever be placed inside standard goods trucks or packed among furniture cartons. Here is the definitive guide to safe, legal, and comfortable pet relocation across India.

The 3 Ways to Relocate Pets in India: Comparing Options

Option 1: Dedicated AC Road Pet Cab (Most Recommended)

For intercity relocations under 1,000 km (e.g. Gurgaon to Jaipur, Delhi to Dehradun, Ajmer to Udaipur), a private sanitized air-conditioned vehicle is by far the safest and least stressful method.

  • Door-to-door transit: Direct pickup from your home and drop-off at your destination villa/apartment.
  • Pet Parent Accompaniment: You or a family member can travel alongside your pet for comfort.
  • Frequent Rest Stops: Driver stops every 2-3 hours for walking, hydration, and bathroom breaks.
  • Zero Station Chaos: Avoid crowded railway stations and noisy airport tarmac baggage belts.

Option 2: Indian Railways 1st Class AC (Coupe Booking)

Indian Railways permits dogs to travel inside the passenger cabin ONLY if you book the entire 1st AC compartment (either a 2-berth Coupe or a 4-berth Cabin). Pets are strictly prohibited in 2nd AC, 3rd AC, or Sleeper coaches.

  • You must book both berths of a 1st AC coupe under the same PNR.
  • Submit a written application to the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) / PRS Booking Supervisor 24 hours prior to allotment.
  • On travel day, take your dog to the station Parcel Office 3 hours before train departure, produce your confirmed ticket and vet certificate, pay the railway luggage freight fee, and obtain the dog transit receipt.

Option 3: Indian Railways Luggage Van (SLR Dog Box) - Caution

If you cannot secure a 1st AC coupe, Indian Railways offers a metal dog box inside the Brake Van / Luggage Compartment (SLR) of certain mail/express trains.

Warning: The brake van is not air-conditioned and is exposed to extreme engine heat, brake dust, and high decibel screeching. During Indian summer months, temperatures inside can be fatal. We do not advise this option unless accompanied by an experienced handler who checks and waters your dog at every railway stop.

Mandatory Veterinary Documentation Checklist

Regardless of which travel mode you select, Indian authorities require three key documents:

  1. Updated Vaccination Record Book: Must show Rabies vaccination administered at least 21 days before departure and not older than 1 year, plus DHLPP/core vaccines.
  2. Veterinary Fitness Certificate (Fit to Travel): Stamped and signed by a government-registered Veterinary Surgeon (B.V.Sc / M.V.Sc). Must certify that your pet is free from infectious/contagious diseases and fit to undergo intercity road or rail journey. Must be issued within 24 to 48 hours prior to departure.
  3. Microchip Certificate (If Traveling by Air): A 15-digit ISO microchip registration document is required for domestic airline pet transit (Air India / Akasa).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can packers and movers carry my pet in the household goods truck?

No, absolutely not. Putting animals inside a cargo container is illegal, cruel, and hazardous. Pets must travel in dedicated air-conditioned passenger vehicles, by train in 1st AC coupes, or via commercial airlines.

Can I take my dog in Indian Railways trains?

Yes, but dogs are allowed in passenger compartments ONLY if you book the entire 1st Class AC coupe (2-berth) or cabin (4-berth). Alternatively, they can be booked in the guard's brake van (SLR dog box) with a valid vet fitness certificate.

What veterinary certificates are mandatory for intercity pet travel?

You need an updated Rabies vaccination card and an official "Fit to Travel" health certificate signed and stamped by a registered veterinarian within 24 to 48 hours of journey date.

How often should a pet cab stop during highway transit?

A dedicated pet cab should stop every 2 to 3 hours for 15-20 minutes to allow the dog to relieve itself, stretch its legs, and drink fresh water in the shade.

Can cats be transported by road across states?

Yes. Cats travel best inside a secure, padded cat carrier placed in a climate-controlled car. Ensure the vehicle windows remain closed whenever doors are opened at highway stops to prevent escape.
